Passive Alert Trainers Course Overview
By Dan Reiter
The initial training of a detection dog will determine his performance, maintenance requirements, and his ability to learn for life. When working dogs with undesirable alert and drive issues due to prior conditioning it is never very efficient and subject to high maintenance. The dog always goes back to his initial training for better or worse when stressed or for problem solving. This course shows how to build a solid foundation in the passive alert detection dog.
Being from a hunting background my observations on the “average” detector dog training taking place rarely allowed dog to hunt and self learn. Training that required too much handler or trainer involvement. Most methods involved attempts to fool the dog that his toy comes from the source. Such as fake ball throws to start the search, or sneaking the ball out without dog seeing it.Other methods condition the dog to continually tug on the odor source during his foundation training reinforcing a behavior that is undesirable for a passive alert dog. Most of these methods are subject to high maintenance and produce a dog that continually cycles focus from the odor source to the source of the reinforcement (handler).
Training with the K9 BSD behavior shaping device instantly disconnects handler from reinforcement in the dog’s mind. The use of the remote allows delivery of active toy direct from a variety of training aids creating behavior generalization. This eliminates the dog ever learning to read the handler from day one and the simplified learning with split second timing of reinforcement. The training protocol presented in this course will show you how to condition a strong hunting behavior to target odor and a dog that stays loaded in drive when on point.
This course covers dog selection, initial imprinting, training the alert behavior, conditioning a release cue, behavior generalization and additional information unique to the K9 BSD. Whether you are a seasoned trainer or not this course will show how to efficiently implement a remote reward system into your training.
A few comments from past classes
"I was fortunate enough to see the transition in dogs using the K-9 Behavior Shaping Device at Elite K-9 in Paducah, Kentucky. Dan Reiter is an amazing trainer and I would recommend the program to any K-9 team. I witnessed green dogs on Monday. By Thursday, the green dogs were fully functioning. I can't speak enough about how successful this program is."

Hi Dan,
Hope you made it home from Kentucky ok. I got Belu Certified yesterday and he found 4 out of 4 hides. I am not sure how long it would have taken to switch him over to passive with out your help and the device.

Hi Dan,
The things are doing fine. Your device is fantastic, amazing. My dogs are crazy to work it. I am also working to buy another device to army.
Best regards,
